U.S. Embassy in Senegal

There is a potential for demonstrations this afternoon. Demonstrations could take place near the Place de Nationale (formerly Place de L’Obelisque) or other locations in Dakar beginning in the afternoon on Friday, December 30^th, 2022 and possibly continuing throughout the weekend. While protests are typically peaceful, they can quickly turn confrontational and escalate into violence between demonstrators and police. 

Actions to take: 

• Monitor local media for updates.
• Avoid crowds.
• Avoid demonstrations.
• Be aware of your surroundings.
• Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
