President Sall announced today that Senegal’s presidential election will be postponed without specifying a new date.
The postponement may lead to protests in Dakar and across Senegal. The Embassy will provide updates on specific issues of concern, but we urge all U.S. citizens traveling or residing in Senegal to exercise caution.
While these events are often peaceful, they can also quickly turn confrontational and escalate into violence. There is the possibility of burning tires and the use of tear gas.
American citizens are urged to avoid any areas where such events are ongoing. If the Embassy receives more specific information regarding dates and times of demonstrations, marches, or gatherings we will send updated alerts.
Actions to take:
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Avoid crowds.
- Avoid demonstrations.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
