Demonstration Alert: Increased risk of demonstrations in Senegal

Location: Throughout Senegal

Event: Due to tensions related to the January 23rd local elections, there is an increased risk of both spontaneous and planned demonstrations throughout Senegal during the next two weeks.  In Dakar, areas of potential protests include but are not limited to: the VDN; Constitutional Council HQ (near the Philip Morris building); the Supreme Court on the Corniche; Grand Yoff; Medina; Place de l’Obelisque; the Palais de Justice of Dakar; the UCAD campus and surrounding neighborhoods; and the Place de l’Independence.

While these protests are typically peaceful, they can quickly turn confrontational and escalate into violence. U.S. citizens are encouraged to avoid any locations where demonstrations are ongoing, and to keep doors locked and windows rolled up when travelling by car.

Actions to Take:

  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Avoid crowds.
  • Avoid demonstrations.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
  • Keep a low profile.
