Dear trainees

Thank you for the warm welcome.  It is a pleasure to be here with you today.

The last time I visited Saint-Louis was in September 2017.  My colleagues had told me about a place called Maison de la Gare, so I was interested to see it for myself.  I visited Maison de la Gare, I met with Mr. Issa Kouyate and his staff, and I was very impressed with the excellent work they do every day to help vulnerable children in Saint-Louis.

I am proud to be sitting here with you today in this facility that was built with support from the United States.  In a few minutes, I look forward to touring the facility and meeting with some of the young trainees who are raising chicks and chickens here.

This is an important initiative.  For Senegal to succeed, all of its people must be able to succeed.  For youth to succeed, they need skills.  This project gives them important skills that they can use not only to support themselves, but eventually to provide some support to their families and communities.

To the young trainees, I would like to say –  We applaud you for your initiative.  Learning a new skill like this is not always an easy thing, and you may want to give up.  But don’t give up.  Persevere.  If you complete this training, you will gain important and valuable skills that will help you for the rest of your lives.  So, keep up the good work.  I look forward to hearing about your successes in the future.

Thank you all for your time.
