Returnee IDPs and Refugees in the Casamance Celebrate PRM-funded Assistance
PRM-funded shelter and WASH assistance continues to provide support and stability to communities in the Casamance. Grateful community members and local government officials from Nyassia Prefecture came together on August 27 to celebrate PRM-funded partner Shelter for Life’s Returnee Reintegration Program for victims of the conflict in the Casamance. Over the past year, 3,000 IDP and refugee returnees in 26 villages have benefited from the assistance to this district neighboring Guinea-Bissau.
More specifically, 300 families received new homes as well as latrines and 26 community wells were built or rehabilitated. Although the Nyassia Sub-Prefect, Abdoulaye Kharma, wished that the program could continue in his prefecture, the community expressed great appreciation for the assistance. With PRM funding, Shelter for Life has been implementing reintegration activities in the Ziguinchor region over the past three years reaching 8,775 individuals. The fourth phase of Shelter for Life’s program will continue in the Goudoump Department in neighboring Sedhiou region.
