Security Alert – U. S. Embassy Dakar, Senegal

Location: Ziguinchor and Cap Skiring

Event: On March 29, 2018, local press reported that gunmen, while stopping and robbing vehicles traveling on the Route Régionale 20 (R20) in the Ziguinchor Region, opened fire on individuals that tried to drive past them. Reports indicate that one Senegalese citizen was killed and one Senegalese and one French citizen were wounded. The R20 connects the city of Ziguinchor with the resort town of Cap Skiring.

Until further notice, U.S. government personnel are prohibited from personal travel outside of the cities of Zuiginchor and Cap Skiring in the area west of the city of Ziguinchor (or west of Route Nationale 4) between the Casamance River and Bissau-Guinean border.

The previously issued restriction on travel along the Route Nationale 4 south of Ziguinchor remains in place for U.S. Government personnel.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid road travel between the cities of Ziguinchor and Cap Skiring in the area west of the city of Ziguinchor (or west of Route Nationale 4) between the Casamance River and Bissau-Guinean border.
  • Monitor local media for updates
  • Keep a low profile.
