Dear beneficiaries

I am delighted to be here in honor of International Women’s Day.  March 8 may have been International Women’s Day, but in the United States, the month of March is recognized as Women’s History Month.  It is therefore fitting that we are gathered today to recognize the work that female prisoners and former prisoners have done to improve the economic potential for themselves, their families, and their communities.

I would like to thank Tostan, the prison and governmental officials, and other partners for their work on this important mission.

The U.S. Embassy was proud to help support Tostan in its recent efforts to support the reconciliation of over 80 former prisoners with their families and offer critical vocational training.  Through this training, 30 women who were formerly prisoners in Diourbel gained skills on income generating activities such as food transformation and sewing.

We know that in all countries around the world sustained economic development is not possible without the full and active participation of women in the economy.

To the women who have benefited from training on vocational skills and income generating activities, I thank you for your dedication to improving your lives and the lives of your families.  I commend you for your hard work and I wish you success.
