U.S. Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Uzra Zeya met with Senegalese government officials, civil society, and international organization representatives during a March 13-14, 2023 visit to Dakar. The visit expandedon discussions at the December 2022 Africa LeadersSummit in Washington, D.C., and highlighted the upcoming March 29-30 Summit for Democracy (S4D).

In her meetings, Under Secretary Zeya discussed regional security, global human rights issues, and the state of democracy across West Africa.  “These engagements allowed for impactful dialogue on criticalissues and reaffirmed the strong bonds between the United States and Senegal,” Zeya said.

While in Dakar, Zeya met with President Macky Salland joined U.S. Ambassador Michael Raynor and Interior Minister Antoine Diome to break ground on a $6.2 million U.S.-funded project to modernize the national police academy, financing new infrastructure, equipment, and training curriculua.

Zeya also delivered remarks on women and girls’ leadership in building an inclusive digital future at an event hosted by UN Women Senegal.   “From fostering democratic renewal to reducing poverty and promoting economic growth, building a more inclusive digital world is key to progress,” Zeya said.  “The only way we achieve this vision is by advancing the full and meaningful participation of women and girls, in all their diversity, both online and offline.”
